The kids loved last week’s unit on There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly. It was slightly morbid but…hey! it got their attention.
This week I decided to resurrect The old Lady and read There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed Some Leaves. (affiliate links abound!)
I found the printables online and bought the canister at Walmart. After cutting a mouth, she was ready to get busy swallowing!
The students took turns retelling the story using the printable prompts, telling what she swallowed and WHY she swallowed it as they stuck the pumpkin, shirt, pole, pants, etc in her mouth.
With each group, I quickly cut out leaves and had the students flip through their decks and name off words (word level drill). I wrote them on the leaves and passed them back to the student for the next activity.
When it came back to their turn, they had to make this sentence (sentence level articulation drill/sentence structure/past tense verb endings) “There was an old lady who swallowed a _______”. They would insert their word into that sentence.
