Darla Gardner, MS, CCC-SLP

Darla has worked in both the educational and skilled nursing settings since graduating from the University of Texas at Dallas in 2002.

Although there is a special place in her heart for both settings, the early childhood setting in the public school has become her passion.

After working as the only special education professional on campus for a few years, Darla collaborated with general education teachers and administrators to develop a robust, effective early language intervention program. Taking time to learn about the state standards and associating the early language concepts needed to achieve each proved effective in training colleagues in providing language interventions in the classroom.

Working alongside parents and teachers to provide interventions is the best strategy for long-term success.

Are you a craft loving SLP? I didn’t used to be but when I realized there are SO many language goals you can target doing simple color, cut and glue crafts, I was all in. Think about your kids and how frustrating it must be to try to follow whole group instructions in the classroom. Why wouldn’t you want to target those concepts needed in a smaller group setting?

I’m not going to lie…this transition to privat

I’m not going to lie…this transition to private practice hasn’t been all that easy. I’ve gotten on 3 major insurances and secured 3 different Medicaid managed care contracts. The paperwork will get easier but there is a HUGE learning curve.

Opening a clinic on a shoestring budget has been challenging, but it is possible! I was able to purchase pre-loved assessments in a Facebook group to get me started. I’ll purchase new ones when I can! Here is how I built my manipulatives kit after my $15 @dollartree run😂.
