Fire Safety Week is in October and during that week, our early childhood center theme is Community Helpers.
Since starting a hybrid of in person and virtual therapy, I have been sharing my weekly lesson plans in my Instagram Stories. They are also saved to my highlights on IG.
My speech therapy sessions always begin with a song. That gives the kids a chance to get their wiggles out if we just picked them up from recess or P.E. Songs are a great way to work on language skills: action words, positional terms, vocabulary.
After songs, we move to books. That may be a traditional picture book or an interactive book, adapted for the language level of the group. We will use objects to “play” during or after reading our book. Finally, we clean up. We sing the clean up song and pick up our table/sanitize with wipes.
Our community helper themed sessions will focus initially on Fire Safety since that is what the classroom teachers are primarily focusing on. The fire department comes and gives a presentation. The kids get to see the fire truck up close and personal.
We then move on to other community helpers the next session such as police, postal workers, grocers, doctors, etc. I have a set of occupation professionals from Lakeshore that I inherited from a teacher when she retired. They are easy to clean and very sturdy to use with young students.
That interactive book pictured above can be downloaded HERE. It comes with a Bingo game that targets several different community helpers too!
I want to share with you the Google Doc where I plan out my week. It has several different picture book read alouds using SafeYouTube, three different songs, a few Boom Cards and several different simple print and play activities from Teachers Pay Teachers.
You can click on the image above to download and make your own copy of my Preschool Lesson Plans for Speech Therapy in a Google Doc that includes links to EVERYTHING. Feel free to add to your copy of the Google Doc, delete anything you don’t need. Keep it open all week to quickly access your activities.
I hope your community helper week goes smoothly and much less stressful as a result of having these activities already planned for you!
Please feel free to share in the comments activities that you find that are exciting and even better if they are FREE!
