Using Food and Family themes at Thanksgiving
Some of my favorite preschool speech therapy activities to do in November target Food and Family themes.
Family themed preschool activities
Doing family theme activities with this generation can be a sensitive topic. That’s why when I begin a lesson about families, we lay the groundwork out ahead of time by talking about what a family is. At this age, a family is anyone who you love and who takes care of you. Students in preschool may just now be realizing that families can look different. Not all families have the same members. Some may consist of only grandparents, single parents, older siblings who play the parent role. Not all families are permanent as my students in foster care have experienced. It is my job to help the child identify who is in their family, accept it for what it is and be proud of it-as unique as it may be.
Using fingerplays and rhymes to promote imitation skills and oral language is one of my favorite speech therapy activities. I have included some family themed fingerplays in this week’s lesson plans.

With Thanksgiving approaching, many families will be gathering together preparing food and eating together. With this tradition, now is a good time to target some early food themes like grocery shopping, cooking and baking.
Grocery shopping and baking activities create an excellent situation to work on vocabulary and sequencing. Sorting foods by group, where they are stored, etc. make a meaningful language experience for young students.
I have previously shared a parent handout to work on specific language in the kitchen when baking muffins as well as a super easy recipe that requires very few ingredients.
In my Instagram highlights, I have been saving all of my themes and sharing even more activities and books that I find useful. Always feel free to share some of your favorites in the comments below!
