Before we get into full Halloween mode in speech therapy, my class is going to have a pumpkin themed week. This week we will go over the life cycle of a pumpkin and take a virtual field trip to a pumpkin patch. As a school based SLP in an Early Childhood Center, I always try to pre-teach and reinforce vocabulary that my students are being exposed to at their homes and in their classrooms.
This week some students will be carving pumpkins with their families. Our PreK and Kindergarten classes will each be making a pumpkin for our annual contest. It is a perfect opportunity to talk about not only the pumpkin, its seeds and pulp but also facial expressions, body parts, descriptive vocabulary, spatial concepts and more.
There are so many great picture books with pumpkins in their story line but not a TON of books about pumpkins that use simplified vocabulary and concepts for my young students. I have included my favorites in my lesson plans linked here:
The songs I have included also work on multiple language skills using pumpkin themed vocabulary.
There are even more links included for a virtual field trip and a pumpkin dissecting activity. I use these links in my Canvas classroom for parents to access in the evenings, weekends and on days off of speech therapy so they can teach/review vocabulary and concepts at home.
Here is a video of how my Google slides are organized for my Canvas classroom homepage:
Any other questions about how I use my lesson plans in virtual and in person speech therapy sessions? Feel free to follow along on Instagram. I share activities and new ideas throughout the week in my stories and save them in my highlights.
You can find my last few weeks’ lesson plans in my IG highlights or read more here on previous blog posts.
